Marriage in Germany is becoming less common, and when it does happen, it’s happening later in life.
According to new data from the Federal Statistical Office, the average age at which women get married is nearly 33, while men marry at 35. This is a significant increase from 1993, when the average age for women was 27 and for men, it was 29.
Over the past few decades, marriage has seen a decline in popularity. Today, only half of all adults in Germany are married, compared to 60% thirty years ago.
In 2023, 361,000 marriages were registered, marking one of the lowest figures since 1950. Of these, less than 3% were same-sex marriages. The number of divorces is also at a historic low, with approximately 129,000 divorces annually.
Additionally, 22.6 million people in Germany are either not currently married or have never been married, excluding those who are divorced or widowed.
