Germany’s Green youth demands more migrants and increased support for migrants

Germany’s Green Youth, the youth wing of the Greens party, has called for the country to accept more migrants and increase government spending on migrant support.

In a 10-point plan released on February 5, the group responded to Greens chancellor-candidate Robert Habeck’s recent stance on stricter border controls ahead of the federal elections on February 23.

The youth wing sharply criticized Habeck, declaring that accepting migrants is “non-negotiable” and accusing mainstream politicians of fueling “racist debates” about limiting migrant numbers. Their demands included funding for migrant rescue operations in the Mediterranean and better integration efforts in Germany.

The Young Greens also called for stronger action against “Nazis” and “radicalized” youth, regardless of nationality. They highlighted the need for programs addressing gender-based violence among young men and challenging societal views on masculinity.

The group’s manifesto also emphasized Germany’s “feminist foreign policy” as a key part of solidarity, urging Berlin to continue its climate policies, which they claim will reduce refugee numbers in the long run.

As the federal election looms, the Greens have tried distancing themselves from some of their more left-wing policies after suffering significant losses in 2024 elections. Meanwhile, the Right is gaining momentum, with the hard-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) regularly polling above 20%.
