Former U.S. President Donald Trump will begin receiving back materials that were seized during an FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago residence. CNN reports this, citing sources familiar with the situation.
The search of Trump’s Florida home took place in August 2022. According to court documents, among the confiscated items were approximately 100 classified documents mixed with personal belongings such as clothing, gifts, non-classified papers, and newspaper clippings.
Previously, Trump had been accused of unlawfully retaining classified materials after leaving office. However, his return to the White House once again grants him broad authority over government secrets. Among the personal items set to be returned to Trump are golf shirts, birthday cards, and photographs of singer Celine Dion.
Following the closure of the criminal case, the U.S. Department of Justice has begun the process of returning the items collected during the investigation. Prosecutors and FBI agents have received the necessary instructions. In July 2024, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon officially dismissed the case against Trump regarding the unlawful retention of classified documents. By the end of January, the investigation was fully closed.
