In January, 3,479 migrants arrived on Italy’s coasts, a 13% increase from December, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
Most migrants (99%) came from Libya, with a small number (1%) departing from Algeria. Bangladesh was the leading country of origin, with 35% of arrivals, followed by Pakistan (22%) and Syria (13%).
Around 83% of arrivals landed in Lampedusa, with others reaching various ports across Italy. Tragically, UNHCR reports that at least two newborns died and one went missing in a shipwreck off the Libyan coast in January. Since the start of 2025, eight people have died on the central Mediterranean route. UNHCR supports Italian authorities in assisting migrants, focusing on vulnerable individuals such as minors.
