The European Union is prepared to take countermeasures to protect its trade interests if the United States imposes new tariffs. This was stated by European Council President António Costa, who emphasized that Brussels is open to negotiations with Washington.
He also noted that, given the existing global challenges, it is crucial not to exacerbate the situation by creating new barriers that could negatively impact the global economy. According to him, a potential trade war between the EU and the US would have serious consequences, as the two economies together account for 40% of global GDP.
Earlier, on February 1, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to impose import tariffs on goods from the EU, accusing Brussels of treating Washington unfairly. In response, on February 2, a representative of the European Commission stated that the EU currently has no information on specific US decisions but is ready to take decisive action if necessary.
According to The Financial Times, the EU is considering restrictions on major US IT companies as a possible countermeasure if Washington moves forward with imposing tariffs on European products.
