Former U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on the Republic of South Africa (RSA), accusing its government of discriminating against the white minority—Afrikaners—as well as pursuing a hostile foreign policy toward the United States and its allies. The corresponding decree was published on the White House website.
According to the document, the sanctions were introduced in response to a new law in South Africa that allows the government to seize agricultural land from Afrikaners without compensation. The decree emphasizes that this violates the rights of an ethnic minority and constitutes a “shocking disregard” for civil liberties.
Furthermore, Trump condemned South Africa’s stance on the Gaza conflict, noting that its government “accused Israel, rather than Hamas, of genocide” in the International Court of Justice. The document also highlights South Africa’s growing ties with Iran, including military and nuclear cooperation, which the U.S. considers a threat to its security.
As part of the sanctions, Washington:
will halt financial and other assistance to South Africa;
will facilitate the resettlement of Afrikaner refugees in the U.S. and grant them asylum.
