Most often citizens of Ukraine and Syria try to enter Germany illegally – statistics

The second half of 2024 revealed that among those who tried to enter Germany without the necessary documents, the most common nationalities were Syrians, Ukrainians, Afghans, and Turks.

This data was provided by the German government in response to a request from Left Party members of the Bundestag, as reported by DW. Syrians make up 20.6% of those attempting to cross the border without documents, while Ukrainians account for almost 20%. It is noted that not all Ukrainians can freely enter Germany.

Ukrainian citizens who have been living abroad for an extended period and are not facing danger in their country do not require protection. Relocation for other reasons is not possible without the necessary long-term residence visa, according to the German government’s explanation.

The total number of attempts to enter Germany illegally has decreased from 127,549 in 2023 to 83,572 in 2024. The number of people without necessary documents who indicated their intention to seek asylum has also decreased.

Border checks continue at Germany’s internal land borders until March 15.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser recently stated that checks will continue “until external border protection is effectively operational.”
