US President Donald Trump stated that he had a telephone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. According to him, the discussion focused on ending the war in Ukraine. This was reported by the New York Post.
Commenting on the conversation, Trump said that the Russian president “wants people to stop dying in Ukraine.” The head of the White House expressed confidence that the conflict should be resolved soon. He also noted that he already has a clear plan to achieve this goal.
“There is such a terrible war in Ukraine. I want to put an end to this mess,” Trump said and instructed his National Security Advisor Mike Waltz to focus on conflict resolution. The US President also emphasized that the parties are ready for meetings to discuss the peace process.
When asked about the number of contacts with Putin, Trump preferred not to disclose details, stating, “I’d rather keep quiet.” Additionally, he expressed a desire to make a $500 million deal with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding US access to rare earth minerals and gas in Ukraine in exchange for security guarantees as part of a potential peace settlement.
The publication also reports that next week, US Vice President J.D. Vance plans to meet with Zelensky at the Munich Security Conference, where they will discuss ways to end the war.
Earlier, Zelensky repeatedly called on Trump to first negotiate with him to develop a unified position on peace settlement in Ukraine before discussing the issue with Putin. However, Trump chose a different approach.
