Libyan authorities have discovered around 50 bodies in two mass graves in the desert, officials reported on Sunday.
The first mass grave was found on Friday at a farm in the city of Kufra, containing 19 bodies. The second grave was uncovered after a raid on a human trafficking center, where, according to survivors, up to 70 victims may have been buried.
Migrants attempting to reach Europe often fall victim to violence in war-torn Libya. Last year, authorities found the bodies of 65 people in the Shuayrif area.
Libya remains a key transit point for migrants from Africa and the Middle East. Since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country has been in chaos, enabling human traffickers to profit from smuggling people across the Mediterranean.
Human rights groups and the UN have consistently documented abuses against migrants in Libya, including torture, rape, and forced labor. Even in state-run detention centers, conditions remain extremely harsh.
