Scholz and Merz first debate: Ukraine and migration in the spotlight

On February 9, the first televised debate took place between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and opposition leader Friedrich Merz.

In the context of the election campaign, where Merz is ahead of Scholz in the polls, the debate became an important moment for both sides.

The main focus was on migration and the economy. Scholz criticized Merz’s vote with the right-wing party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD), while Merz defended his move by citing migration security threats. The economy was discussed in the context of recession and rising prices amid the war in Ukraine.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, both expressed support for Kyiv but did not propose specific actions. Scholz stated that peace might come with the arrival of Trump, while Merz emphasized that Ukraine’s NATO membership is impossible while the war continues. Both leaders are awaiting the position of the U.S. at the upcoming Munich Security Conference.

The debate took place in a restrained, business-like atmosphere. Merz appeared confident and avoided major mistakes, allowing him to win the first round.
