Trump announces 25% duties on steel and aluminum worldwide

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from all countries. An official announcement on the matter is expected on February 10, according to AP.

Any steel entering the United States will be subject to a 25% tariff, Trump stated, adding that similar measures will apply to aluminum. However, the exact date when the tariffs will take effect has not yet been specified.

Additionally, the politician announced plans to introduce “reciprocal tariffs” on goods if other countries impose duties on American products. According to him, this measure is necessary to create fairer trade conditions.

During his first presidential term, Trump had already implemented tariffs on metals. In 2018, he imposed a 25% tariff on steel imports and a 10% tariff on aluminum, initially exempting Canada and Mexico. However, these countries were later included under the tariffs, which were subsequently lifted in 2019.

That same year, Trump sharply increased tariffs on steel and aluminum from Turkey, citing strained relations with Ankara.

Under President Joe Biden’s administration, the U.S. and the EU reached an agreement on tariffs in 2021. However, in 2024, Washington reintroduced a 25% tariff on steel not produced in Mexico and a 10% tariff on aluminum.
