A group of Danish citizens has launched a tongue-in-cheek initiative to buy California from the U.S., flipping the script on former President Donald Trump’s interest in purchasing Greenland. Dubbed the “Denmarkification” campaign, the effort aimed to crowdfund a staggering $1 trillion to transform the Golden State into a Danish territory infused with Scandinavian values.
Their slogan? “Make California Great Again”—a playful jab at Trump’s famous catchphrase. According to the campaign’s website, the deal might actually pique his interest, given his history of criticizing California.
“Let’s be real—Trump’s no fan of California. He’s called it a disaster and sparred with its leaders for years. We figure, for the right price, he’d gladly let it go,” the website quipped.
To entice donors, the campaign promised perks ranging from personalized thank-you notes to, supposedly, private beach access in a Danish California. The initiative was a direct response to Trump’s push to acquire Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory he lauded for its strategic location and resources. He even hinted at using economic or military leverage to secure the deal.
Mocking his Greenland ambitions, the website framed the campaign as a cheeky counteroffer. According to the UK’s Daily Mail, the online petition—launched by Xavier Dutoit—quickly amassed 200,000 signatures within hours. Whether satire or serious, the movement certainly captured public attention.
