French far-left pushes fourth no-confidence vote against government

The far-left party Unsubmissive France has launched a fourth vote of no confidence against Prime Minister François Bayrou’s government in response to his repeated use of a constitutional provision to bypass parliament on budget legislation.

The motion is set to be debated on Wednesday, February 12.

“No coup against universal suffrage or against the National Assembly—we are introducing a new vote of no confidence!” declared Mathilde Panot, leader of the Unsubmissive France parliamentary group.

This latest motion comes after Bayrou invoked Article 49.3 of the French Constitution for the fourth time, allowing his government to pass legislation without a vote in the National Assembly. The procedure was used to push through the spending section of the 2025 social security financing bill, the final budget measure still awaiting approval.

Despite the push from the far-left, the vote is expected to fail—like the previous three—due to a lack of support from the Socialist Party and the right-wing National Rally.

France’s ongoing budget deadlock, coupled with political instability, has weakened investor confidence and raised concerns among businesses and the public.
