Poland presidential election: Confederation’s Mentzen climbs in polls as PiS candidate unveils tax and energy reforms

As Poland’s presidential race heats up, right-wing Confederation party candidate Sławomir Mentzen has seen a significant boost in support. A recent poll from “Super Express” shows Mentzen at 16%, marking his best result yet.

Though KO’s Rafał Trzaskowski leads at 35% and PiS’s Karol Nawrocki follows with 25%, both have dropped 2 points since the previous survey, while Mentzen gained 2.

Despite trailing the leaders, Mentzen is determined, claiming the second round is within his grasp. “It’s a tough fight, but we still have three months left to fight for that second round!” he posted on X, emphasizing that his campaign is up against much larger forces, including state-backed companies, international corporations, and major media outlets. He even asked for donations, stressing the disparity in campaign funds.

On the other side, Nawrocki, representing PiS, is focusing on appealing to voters with promises of significant cuts: a one-third reduction in electricity bills, a reduction of VAT on food and energy, and more local investments. He’s also vocal about opposing the EU’s migration pact and Green Deal, alongside advancing the CPK airport project.

As the presidential race nears, Mentzen’s surprising rise in the polls shows the changing dynamics of the competition, with the first round scheduled for May 18 and a potential second round on June 1.
