Slovak PM demands transparency on USAID funds in letter to Elon Musk

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has penned an open letter to Elon Musk, urging full disclosure on USAID funds funneled into Slovakia. Fico alleges that millions from the U.S. foreign aid agency have been used to prop up progressive NGOs, media outlets, and journalists—effectively manipulating Slovakia’s political landscape.

“The reported plan to dismantle USAID under the new U.S. administration is of immense significance for Slovakia,” Fico declared on X, arguing that the agency has been instrumental in distorting the country’s political system in favor of certain parties.

He formally requested a breakdown of the funds distributed in Slovakia, emphasizing that while some projects may have been beneficial, others amounted to blatant foreign interference. “Public sources indicate USAID has poured millions into Slovakia in a relatively short period,” Fico wrote, adding that the misuse of these funds had created a political imbalance so severe he was willing to meet Musk in person to discuss it.

Slovak opposition leader Michal Šimečka dismissed Fico’s letter as an embarrassment, accusing the prime minister of wasting time on conspiracy theories instead of addressing real economic issues. “Rather than playing Facebook diplomat, he should focus on protecting Slovak industry,” Šimečka said, warning that Trump’s potential trade war could hit Slovakia harder than any other EU country.

Pro-Fico media, however, doubled down, alleging that USAID—through CIA-backed operations and in collaboration with George Soros-linked NGOs—had orchestrated coups, spread radical ideologies, destabilized national unity, and imposed harmful economic policies under the guise of aid.

Despite ongoing debates over foreign interference in European politics, EU leaders have remained conspicuously silent on the Fico-Musk exchange.
