Starting from February 12, employees of the Lithuanian Seimas have been prohibited from using the Chinese chatbot DeepSeek on work devices.
According to LRT, the relevant order was signed by the Chancellor of the Seimas, Algirdas Stončaitis. The document states that the use of DeepSeek is banned on equipment issued by the parliament’s office.
According to Stončaitis, these measures were taken to protect data from potential risks associated with Chinese artificial intelligence technologies. However, the ban does not apply to members of parliament—for that, a decision by the Seimas board is required. Employees are also allowed to use the chatbot on their personal devices.
It was previously reported that Lithuania is considering banning DeepSeek for key organizations and government institutions. Additionally, the Italian authorities have already ordered restrictions on the processing of Italian users’ data in DeepSeek, while the Netherlands has announced an investigation into the data collection practices of the Chinese company behind the chatbot.
