A federal court in Washington has ruled that the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump must cancel an order that froze foreign aid programs for 90 days.
Judge Amir Ali, citing the “widespread damage” caused by the halt in funding for overseas organizations, ruled that the programs must be reinstated.
The Trump administration defended the freeze, saying it was necessary to assess the effectiveness of the programs. However, Judge Ali, appointed by Joe Biden, stated that Trump’s representatives did not explain why a complete suspension of aid was the only reasonable solution and failed to provide sufficient evidence to justify ignoring the needs of many organizations at risk of closing due to the funding cutoff.
The court has ordered the administration to submit a report on the implementation of the ruling by Tuesday.
