Munich car attack sparked renewed debate on deportations and immigration policy in Germany

The debate over deportations in Germany has intensified following an attack in Munich by an Afghan national on February 13.

The suspect deliberately drove his car into a crowd, injuring 36 people, and admitted to an Islamist motive for the attack. Although his asylum request was rejected in 2020, he remained in Germany due to a temporary suspension and valid residence permit.

The attack has sparked renewed calls for tighter immigration and deportation policies. Politicians are demanding faster deportations of convicted criminals, while concerns about the feasibility of deportations to Afghanistan persist due to the country’s unstable situation and lack of diplomatic ties. The German government is working on deportation preparations, but no timeline has been set.

The Munich attack adds to a series of violent incidents by foreign nationals in Germany, leading to further debate on migration and security ahead of the upcoming federal election.
