Tens of thousands of climate activists took to the streets across Germany on Friday, calling for greater attention to climate issues ahead of the federal elections scheduled for February 23.
Activists argue that the climate crisis has been largely overlooked in the election campaign, with debates on immigration and the economy dominating the political discourse. Protesters carried banners reading “Right on a future, instead of a right (wing) future” as they marched near the parliament in Berlin.
The demonstrations were organized by Fridays for Future, a global youth-led climate movement advocating for urgent action against climate change. The group, which announced the protests last November, reported that more than 100,000 people participated in around 150 locations across Germany.
With just over a week until the elections, many activists view this vote as a pivotal moment for the country’s climate policies, urging politicians to prioritize environmental action.
