Woman and child dead after car drives into crowd at Munich protest

Two days after a car rammed into a crowd of demonstrators in Munich, a two-year-old girl and a 37-year-old woman have died from their injuries in the hospital.

According to the police, at least 39 people were injured when a 24-year-old Afghan man drove his vehicle into a demonstration organized by the ver.di trade union on Thursday.

Preliminary assessments suggest that authorities may be investigating the attack as a potential Islamist-motivated crime. The driver is currently in police custody.

On Saturday afternoon, Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the site of the attack and honored the victims by laying a white rose at the makeshift memorial.
