Sweden open to sending troops to Ukraine for future peacekeeping mission

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has stated that Sweden would consider participating in a post-war peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, though further negotiations are needed before any decision is made.

His remarks follow UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s declaration that Britain is prepared to send troops to Ukraine for peacekeeping duties, aiming to demonstrate European nations’ role in shaping an end to the war.

“We will take part in those discussions and of course that is absolutely a possibility,” Kristersson said when asked by Reuters about Sweden’s potential involvement. Speaking on the sidelines of a military exercise in Stockholm, he emphasized that any such deployment would require a “very clear mandate” before being considered.

“Sweden, we are normally a part of strengthening security in our part of the world, so I foresee us to be a part of that this time as well,” he added.

Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard echoed this stance, emphasizing that a lasting and just peace must first be established.

“Once we have such a peace established, we need to ensure it can be maintained, and then our government doesn’t exclude anything,” she told Swedish Radio on Monday.
