Meloni criticizes Paris summit as “anti-Trump” gathering

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has voiced her disapproval of the recent European leaders’ summit in Paris, calling it an “anti-Trump” meeting.

Reports indicate that Meloni arrived late, joining the discussion after it had already been underway for an hour. Following the summit, she expressed disagreement with both the proposals discussed and the selection of attendees. She argued that Brussels should remain the primary venue for decision-making among the 27 EU member states.

Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of avoiding an “anti-Trump format” in such meetings.

“The U.S. is working toward achieving peace, and we must play our role,” Meloni stated.

She also warned that any negotiations regarding Ukraine would fail without proper “security guarantees” for Kyiv. Urging European leaders to consider alternative approaches, she stressed the need for U.S. involvement, asserting that “European and American security is rooted in the Euro-Atlantic framework.”

The emergency summit, organized by French President Emmanuel Macron, took place on February 17. It was held in response to comments by U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, who suggested that the U.S. does not view Europe as a key player in negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
