“Sanctions will have to be lifted”: US and Russian Federation made statements following talks in Riyadh

The negotiations between US and Russian delegations in Riyadh concluded with discussions on ways to normalize diplomatic relations.

The US and Russia agreed to create a consultation mechanism to reduce tensions and appoint high-level teams to work on the Ukraine issue. It is expected that the two sides will cooperate on geopolitical and economic matters after the war ends. The US expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the talks and emphasized the importance of ending the war in Ukraine for lifting sanctions.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the two sides agreed to restore the previous number of embassy staff and highlighted the need for concessions to resolve the conflict. He noted that the EU must participate in the negotiations, as it imposed sanctions on Russia.

On the Russian side, Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov reported that the talks were successful, but the positions of the two countries have not yet aligned. It is expected that negotiations on Ukraine will continue with the involvement of US and Russian representatives.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that the two sides have started to better understand each other’s positions, agreeing on approaches to conflict resolution and the resumption of cooperation.
