Taxi drivers to strike in Athens on February 19

The Athens Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA) has announced a 24-hour strike in Athens this Wednesday, starting at 6 a.m.

Their key demands include allowing taxis to use bus lanes, eliminating competition from ride-hailing services with drivers, and stopping illegal discounts by Uber and Bolt.

SATA is also pushing for stricter enforcement of taxi contract regulations, a 33% increase in the minimum contract price, and the removal of specific provisions from the new tax legislation. Additionally, the union seeks to delay the mandatory transition to zero-emission taxis from 2026 to 2035.

The Athens Taxi Drivers’ Union has also reached out for support from the Greek Federation and other taxi unions. This upcoming taxi strike is part of a broader wave of strikes and work stoppages across various sectors this week.

On Monday, public school teachers staged a three-hour strike to protest the establishment of 22 so-called “Onassis State Schools” in disadvantaged areas.

On Tuesday, journalists will go on strike, demanding collective labor agreements, which means newspapers will not be published on Wednesday.

Additionally, some healthcare workers will go on strike on Wednesday, calling for salary increases.
