On Friday, passengers in several German federal states will face severe disruptions in public transport. Buses, trams, and subways will come to a near-complete halt due to another strike organized by the Verdi trade union.
The strike was triggered by unsuccessful negotiations on wage increases for federal and municipal sector workers. The second round of collective bargaining failed to yield results, prompting the union to intensify pressure on employers.
The strike will affect transportation in Baden-Württemberg, Bremen, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Rhineland-Palatinate. According to Verdi, 53,000 employees from 69 transport companies will participate in the protest, which will last the entire day.
Strikes will also impact other sectors. In particular, public transport workers in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have also announced protests due to labor disputes.
The Verdi and dbb unions are negotiating wages and working conditions for 2.5 million public sector employees, including those in education, administrative institutions, and airports. Firefighters and federal police are also involved in the discussions.
