Deadline approaches for postal voting in Germany’s parliamentary elections

Postal voting for Germany’s parliamentary elections is nearing its final stage, with Thursday marking the last “safe” day for voters opting to send their ballots by post.

Deutsche Post has advised that ballots should be sent no later than February 20 to ensure timely delivery. While later submissions are technically possible, there is no guarantee they will arrive in time to be counted.

In the 2021 federal elections, 43.7% of voters cast their ballots by post, a trend influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. During the European Parliament elections in June 2024, 37.7% of voters used postal voting.

The main voting day remains Sunday, February 23. Meanwhile, the latest poll indicates that the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has seen its approval rating drop to the lowest level in the past 18 months.
