Trump expects China’s leader to visit U.S.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he is expecting a visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States, Reuters reports.

Trump did not specify when exactly the Chinese leader’s visit might take place. However, speaking to reporters aboard the presidential plane, he noted that a new trade agreement between the U.S. and China is “quite possible.”

Xi Jinping last visited the U.S. in November 2023 for a summit with then-President Joe Biden. As a result of the negotiations, both sides agreed to restore military communications and implement measures to limit fentanyl production.

Upon taking office, the Trump administration imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese goods, followed by similar measures against Mexico and Canada. Later, Trump agreed to a 30-day pause on implementing a 25% tariff for Mexico and Canada in exchange for concessions on migration and crime control. However, no such delay was granted to China.

In response, China’s Ministry of Commerce announced retaliatory tariffs on a range of American goods, reigniting the trade war between the world’s two largest economies.
