U.S. outlines conditions for potential Trump-Putin meeting

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the possibility of a personal meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was discussed during a gathering in Riyadh, though no specific timeline has been set.

In an interview with journalist Catherine Herridge, published by the U.S. State Department’s press service, Rubio stressed that such a meeting “will not happen until we know what the meeting will be about.”

When asked if a meeting could take place after 2025, he responded, “I don’t know when it will happen. But a meeting between President Putin and President Trump should have a purpose.”

“We need to know what this meeting is about and what will be achieved during it. Typically, such meetings are not held until some kind of outcome or progress is expected,” he explained.

Rubio emphasized that the timing of any potential meeting largely depends on whether progress can be made toward ending the war in Ukraine.
