On February 28, a nationwide 24-hour strike will take place in Greece, organized by unions to commemorate the country’s deadliest railway disaster. As a result, the Greek railway operator Hellenic Train has announced the cancellation of all train services, including suburban routes in Athens.
According to Ekathimerini, the company stated that “due to the 24-hour strike on Friday, February 28, 2025, no routes will operate across the network.”
Air traffic controllers have also joined the strike, leading to widespread flight cancellations and schedule changes. Airlines Aegean and Olympic Air announced the cancellation of most domestic and international flights for that day, with a few exceptions.
The airline also offered passengers who had planned trips between March 1-3 and wish to change their travel dates due to the strike, the option to rebook tickets free of charge or receive a travel voucher valid until December 31.
In February 2023, a passenger train traveling from Athens to Thessaloniki collided at high speed with a freight train near the city of Larissa. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of 57 people, most of whom were young students.
The disaster sparked mass protests across the country, with more than 65,000 people demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
