Riots broke out near the venue in Berlin where the “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) party event was taking place.
Around 60 protesters staged a demonstration that escalated into clashes with the police. According to exit polls and early election results, AfD is securing around 20% of the vote.
The evening is not over yet. I am confident that we will surpass the 20% mark. This is just the beginning, said AfD treasurer Karsten Hütter in an interview with BILD.
Meanwhile, AfD chancellor candidate Alice Weidel expressed skepticism about the party joining a ruling coalition.
If we continue working as we have with the previous government and also form a coalition with the left in East Germany, we will become the leading political force in the coming years, she stated.
