An increasing number of Ukrainian refugees are securing jobs in Germany, according to data from the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB).
The institute reports that the integration of Ukrainian refugees into the German labor market is progressing steadily. Despite recent challenges in the job market, 43% of Ukrainian refugees were employed in the fourth quarter of last year.
This marks a significant increase compared to previous periods—only 30% were employed in the spring, and just 16% in the summer of 2022.
The study highlights that many asylum seekers who were previously focused on language courses are now transitioning into the workforce. However, German language proficiency remains a major hurdle, as many jobs require fluency. While approximately three-quarters of Ukrainian asylum seekers have completed at least one language course, only 27% have obtained a B2-level certificate, which is necessary for numerous professions.
Another key factor affecting employment, particularly for women, is access to childcare services.
