EU spends more on Russian energy resources than on helping Ukraine

Russia has earned nearly a trillion euros from fuel exports, while the EU is attempting to tighten sanctions. According to The Guardian, the European Union spent more on purchasing Russian oil and gas in 2024 than it allocated to Ukraine in financial assistance.

Estimates from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (Crea) show that, in the third year of the war, the EU purchased energy resources from Russia amounting to 21.9 billion euros. This is 39% more than the 18.7 billion euros the EU provided to Ukraine in financial support in the same year, excluding military and humanitarian aid.

Experts calculated that since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has earned 242 billion euros from the export of fossil fuels. The total income from energy sales since 2022 is already approaching one trillion euros, despite sanctions.

Gas analyst Jan-Erik Fenrich from Rystad Energy notes that since the war began, the role of LNG (liquefied natural gas) in Europe and the UK has significantly increased, rising from 81.3 million tons in 2019 to 119 million tons in 2022. Last year, Russia became the second-largest supplier of LNG to Europe.
