Pope Francis continues to struggle with health complications

Pope Francis remains in serious condition, showing signs of early-stage kidney failure, the Vatican reported on Monday.

The 88-year-old pontiff is fighting pneumonia, which has caused multiple complications, but he remains optimistic and participated in mass on Sunday. The Vatican stated that since Saturday evening, Pope Francis has not experienced respiratory crises, though he continues to receive large amounts of oxygen.

The Pope’s treatment has been adjusted several times since his hospitalization in mid-February, and only by the end of last week did doctors note an improvement in his condition. However, the risks remain high, primarily due to the possibility of sepsis — a severe blood infection that can arise as a complication after pneumonia. Preventing sepsis has become the doctors’ top priority.
