The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a proposal to potentially exclude Canada from the western intelligence alliance “Five Eyes,” which includes the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
According to the Financial Times, one of Trump’s closest advisors, Peter Navarro, insists that the U.S. should remove Canada from this strategically important alliance.
It remains unclear whether Trump himself supports the initiative, but discussions are ongoing among his top officials. The “Five Eyes” alliance is crucial for the exchange of intelligence and is considered the most successful intelligence-sharing agreement in world history. The alliance has existed for decades and has fostered close cooperation between the U.S. and its allies on intelligence matters and operational coordination.
Dennis Wilder, a former CIA official, noted that breaking these long-standing agreements could benefit U.S. adversaries such as Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. Earlier, Trump expressed support for imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian exports to the U.S., which continues to be a focal point.
