Czech Republic intends to increase defense spending to 3% of GDP

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has called for an increase in the country’s defense budget to 3% of GDP in the coming years.

The head of government emphasized that the funds must be used wisely and efficiently. He also noted that the unallocated €93 billion from the reconstruction fund could be directed towards strengthening defense. Following statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump about the need for NATO allies to raise their defense spending to 5% of GDP, this issue has become a priority for European countries.

At the end of February, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reminded that Alliance members must reach the minimum target of 2% of GDP for defense spending, or they will have to take Trump’s position into account.
