Hungary seeks Elon Musk and DOGE’s help to track USAID funds flowing to NGOs

Hungary is doubling down on efforts to trace U.S. taxpayer money flowing into its NGOs, questioning whether these organizations truly operate independently. Government officials are now working with American authorities—and even reaching out to Elon Musk and the DOGE Committee—to uncover the financial trail.

NGOs: Independent or Political Tools?

A recent report from MCC Brussels suggests that state-funded NGOs aren’t as neutral as they claim to be. Rather than acting independently, some seem to function as political tools, using public funds to advance bureaucratic interests. Magyar Nemzet highlights how these organizations exploit their positions for both financial and political gain.

Hungary isn’t taking the issue lightly. The government has appointed a special commissioner to investigate U.S. funding channeled through USAID. Fidesz MP András László, now leading the inquiry, announced his commitment to exposing the money’s purpose and destination.

A New Investigation with U.S. Cooperation

Taking to X, László revealed plans to collaborate with American authorities, the DOGE Committee, and even Elon Musk to track these funds. He praised the groundwork already laid by his U.S. counterparts and emphasized the importance of dismantling what he calls a “globalist corruption machine.”

Meanwhile, the MCC report raises concerns about the growing influence of politically active NGOs, particularly in Germany. Both the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) have criticized state funding for left-wing protest groups, calling their neutrality into question. MCC Brussels Executive Director Frank Füredi didn’t hold back, stating:

“NGOs aren’t ‘non-governmental’ at all anymore. They’re paid activists pushing bureaucratic agendas.”

Orbán Weighs In: A Shift in NGO Funding

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has long warned about foreign influence in domestic affairs. After former U.S. President Donald Trump cut USAID funding, Orbán noted that many left-liberal organizations scrambled to secure financial support from Brussels.

“Our fears have been confirmed,” Orbán declared. “The globalist-Soros network is now fleeing to Brussels after Trump’s decision dealt a major blow to their operations in the U.S.”

As Hungary moves forward with its investigation, the push for transparency in NGO funding is bound to spark further political debate—both in Europe and beyond.
