Microsoft officially announces the discontinuation of Skype

Microsoft has confirmed that the Skype messenger will be discontinued in May 2025, according to the company’s press release.

Earlier, the XDA Developers portal reported that Microsoft had decided to phase out Skype in favor of Teams.

In May 2025, we will cease the use of Skype to focus on Microsoft Teams (the free version), our modern platform for communication and collaboration, which will help optimize our offerings for users and adapt more easily to customer needs, Microsoft stated. Skype will remain available until May 5.

In Teams, users will be able to access most of Skype’s core features, such as video calls, messaging, and file sharing. The app also offers features for organizing meetings, managing calendars, and creating communities.

During the transition period, Teams users will be able to call and communicate with Skype users, and vice versa. It will also be possible to export Skype data.

Skype was founded in 2003 and was acquired by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion. Teams was launched in March 2017.
