Healthcare workers in Germany plan nationwide strike over working conditions

A large-scale strike by healthcare workers is set to take place in Germany, severely limiting patient care across the country.

On March 6, hospital staff, caregivers, and emergency service workers will join a nationwide walkout, leading to the closure of medical institutions, as announced by the Verdi trade union.

The strike stems from an ongoing dispute between the workers and both federal and local authorities regarding the improvement of working conditions.

“What hospital and care facility staff, psychiatric clinics, and emergency services do every day for society is recognized by most people in this country,” said Sylvia Bühler, a member of Verdi’s federal executive board. “But there is no such recognition from the employer,” she added.

Verdi is demanding an 8% pay increase for public sector workers, with a minimum of 350 euros, enhanced allowances for working in tough conditions, and three additional days off. The union is also calling for a 200-euro increase in the monthly stipend for interns and trainees. The third round of negotiations to address the issue will occur in mid-March.
