Russia has expressed its willingness to assist the Donald Trump administration in negotiations with Iran regarding the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program and its support for regional anti-American forces. Bloomberg reported this, citing sources familiar with the situation.
Trump made his request directly to Vladimir Putin during a phone conversation in February. A few days later, representatives of his administration discussed the matter with Russian counterparts during talks in Saudi Arabia, sources in Moscow who wished to remain anonymous said. Neither Russia nor Iran officially confirmed or denied the information about the request.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, in response to a Bloomberg inquiry, stated that “Russia believes the U.S. and Iran should resolve all issues through negotiations” and that Moscow “is ready to do everything possible to achieve this goal.”
An Iranian Foreign Ministry representative, when asked whether Russia had offered to mediate between Tehran and Washington, noted that it is “natural” for countries to offer assistance.
After returning to the White House, Trump sent conflicting signals regarding Iran. He stated that he planned to return to a “maximum pressure” policy, including reinstating sanctions and intensifying pressure on Iran’s security forces. At the same time, Trump emphasized that he wants to “immediately” start working on a “verified nuclear peace agreement with Iran.”
