Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the United States has started a trade war against Canada by imposing 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, effective today.
Trudeau emphasized that, despite the historic friendship and alliance between the two countries, the United States has made a decision that will affect a significant portion of Canadian exports.
In response, Canada implemented similar measures, imposing 25% tariffs on American goods worth $155 billion. The Prime Minister stressed that these measures will remain in place until the U.S. removes its tariffs. He also noted that such actions could significantly impact the economies of both countries, but Canada will not leave such actions by its important partner unanswered.
Trudeau expressed confidence that this conflict will not affect the long-term relationship between the countries, but added that, if necessary, Canada will defend its economic interests.
