U.S. considers potential sanctions relief for Russia amid diplomatic efforts

The U.S. government is considering lifting certain sanctions on Russia as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to improve relations and address the war in Ukraine.

A U.S. official and a source familiar with the matter told Reuters that the White House has directed the State Department and the Treasury Department to compile a list of sanctions that could potentially be lifted. This list is being prepared for discussions between U.S. officials and their Russian counterparts as part of broader negotiations.

According to sources, agencies are drafting proposals to remove restrictions on specific legal entities and individuals, including some Russian oligarchs.

The White House’s recent request for such a document highlights President Trump and his advisers’ openness to easing sanctions as part of a possible deal with Moscow.

However, it remains unclear what specific concessions Washington may seek from Russia in exchange for lifting these sanctions.
