Danish MEP Anders Vistisen isn’t backing down from his sharp response to Donald Trump’s remarks on Greenland. Speaking to European media, he defended his choice words, insisting Denmark deserved more respect as a longtime U.S. ally.
During a European Parliament speech in January, Vistisen bluntly rejected Trump’s suggestion that Greenland could be acquired, making it clear the island wasn’t up for sale. When pressed on whether he regretted telling Trump to “F**k off,” he remained unapologetic.
Denmark, he argued, has stood by the U.S. for decades, sacrificing more soldiers per capita in Iraq and Afghanistan than America itself. While his remarks stirred backlash from pro-Trump supporters, he noted strong backing from European colleagues who share his stance on prioritizing Europe’s interests.
Despite aligning with Trump’s policies on migration and social issues, Vistisen cautioned against Europe becoming a mere extension of American politics. He urged European leaders to defend their economic and geopolitical interests, particularly if tensions escalate into a U.S.-EU trade war.
Trump’s renewed push for Greenland’s acquisition in his March 3 address only reinforced Vistisen’s concerns. While acknowledging growing independence sentiment on the island, he warned that the U.S. held significant leverage.
At the EP, he called for a stronger, more independent Europe—one capable of holding its own against shifting U.S. strategies under Trump.
