The European Council has called on Ukraine, Slovakia, and the European Commission to intensify efforts to resolve the issue of gas transit through Ukraine to Slovakia.
This appeal is outlined in a document on Ukraine, approved by the European Council on March 6, with support from 26 EU countries—Hungary being the sole exception.
The document emphasizes the need for coordinated efforts to address Slovakia’s concerns regarding gas transit.
“The European Council calls on the Commission, Slovakia, and Ukraine to intensify efforts to find effective solutions to the gas transit issue, taking into account the concerns expressed by Slovakia,” the document states.
Notably, the document does not specify the origin of the gas in question.
Slovakia has expressed its expectation that Ukraine will resume gas transit as a “gesture of gratitude.”
Previously, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico insisted that the European Union summit on March 6 adopt a decision on resuming the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, warning that he would block the summit’s conclusions otherwise.
