Germany to hold 24-hour strike at major airports

On Monday, Germany’s largest airports, including Frankfurt, will be affected by a 24-hour strike. The German trade union Verdi has called on public sector and ground services workers to halt operations in protest.

According to Reuters, the union is demanding an 8% wage increase or at least an additional €350 per month. The decision to strike comes after the second round of collective bargaining negotiations failed in February. Employers have rejected the demands as excessive, but talks are set to continue later this month.

In addition to Frankfurt, the strike will impact airports in Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hanover, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin, and Leipzig/Halle.

This strike marks one of the largest protests in Germany’s aviation sector. Verdi has previously organized short-term strikes, including a two-day protest in Munich and work stoppages at Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn airports, which led to the cancellation of 280 flights and affected 48,000 passengers.

A recent strike by public sector workers at the Port of Hamburg also caused significant disruptions at Germany’s largest maritime transport hub.
