Major German airports to face disruption due to 24-hour strike on Monday

On Monday, major airports across Germany, including Frankfurt, the largest airport in the country, will be impacted by a 24-hour strike following a call from the German trade union Verdi.

The union is demanding an 8% wage increase or at least 350 euros more per month for public sector workers and ground handling staff.

The strike comes after the second round of collective bargaining last month ended without an agreement. Employers have rejected the union’s demands, deeming them unaffordable. Negotiations are set to resume later this month.

In addition to Frankfurt, other airports affected by the strike include Munich, the second-busiest airport in the country, as well as Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn-Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hannover, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin, and Leipzig-Halle.

This strike marks a significant escalation in the ongoing negotiations. Last month, Verdi organized several strikes at various German airports, including a two-day strike in Munich. Shorter strikes at Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn airports led to the cancellation of nearly 280 flights, affecting around 48,000 passengers, according to the airport association ADV.
