Migrant boats capsize off Yemen and Djibouti, leaving two dead and 186 missing

Four migrant boats have capsized in waters off Yemen and Djibouti, resulting in at least two deaths and 186 people reported missing, according to the United Nations migration agency.

Two of the boats sank off Yemen on Thursday, said Tamim Eleian, a spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM). While two crewmembers were rescued, 181 migrants and five Yemeni crew members are still missing, Eleian told The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, two other boats capsized near Djibouti, an African nation, at roughly the same time. Two bodies of migrants were recovered, and all other passengers were rescued.

The IOM also reported that 558 people died in 2024 along the perilous migration route from the Horn of Africa to Yemen, which involves crossing the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
