Poland seeks access to nuclear weapons and an army of half a million men

Poland is seeking access to nuclear weapons and aiming to build a half-million-strong army as part of an extensive military expansion to counter perceived threats. Prime Minister Donald Tusk made the announcement on Friday, stating that the country would also implement mandatory military training for every man to ensure readiness for war.

Tusk emphasized that Poland was in “serious talks” with France about securing protection through the French nuclear umbrella, following growing concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump’s potential alignment with Russia and a shift in U.S. foreign policy. Poland views this change as a significant threat to its security, prompting the need to enhance both conventional and nuclear defense capabilities.

Poland currently has the third-largest military in NATO, but Tusk highlighted that the country plans to increase its forces significantly. By the end of the year, Poland aims to have a model in place to train every adult male for potential conflict, bolstering its reserves against threats. Women will also have the option to volunteer, though Tusk stressed that military service remains primarily a male domain.

While Poland remains committed to its NATO membership and maintaining strong ties with the U.S., it is increasing defense spending, with plans to raise its defense budget to 5% of GDP. Poland is already NATO’s top spender, acquiring advanced weapons from both the U.S. and South Korea.

Despite the military buildup, Tusk stated that Poland would not deploy troops to Ukraine for peacekeeping efforts, focusing instead on securing its eastern border, which is also NATO’s and the EU’s boundary. Poland is also considering withdrawing from treaties banning landmines and cluster munitions to further enhance its defense capabilities.
