American billionaire Elon Musk has stated that the United States should leave NATO and stop paying for Europe’s security.
In response to Senator Mike Lee’s proposal to withdraw from the Alliance, Musk briefly replied on X: “We really should.” He later added that it “makes no sense for the U.S. to pay for Europe’s defense.”
Earlier, Donald Trump demanded that NATO countries significantly increase their financial contributions to defense, suggesting raising them from 2% to 5% of GDP.
Amid these statements, some politicians have expressed doubts about the U.S. commitment to the North Atlantic Alliance in the event of a crisis. On Thursday, Trump told reporters that he was “not very sure” whether NATO allies would support the U.S. if America itself were attacked.
French President Emmanuel Macron, commenting on the situation after the EU leaders’ security summit in Brussels, emphasized that France remains a “loyal and dedicated ally.”
According to unofficial reports, Trump is discussing with his advisors a possible revision of the U.S. role in NATO, prioritizing member states that allocate at least a certain percentage of their GDP to defense.
