Italy hopes Macron’s peacekeeper plan for Ukraine won’t be needed

Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, expressed hope that French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to deploy European peacekeepers in Ukraine will not be necessary.

Tajani’s comments, issued by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed Italy’s official stance on the matter. He said, “We hope that what Macron is proposing will not be necessary.”

He continued, “Because we—just like President Zelensky—believe that the war can end within a year. We have other fronts open, and we must work towards a fair peace agreement… one that respects Ukraine’s position,” emphasizing Italy’s focus on a diplomatic resolution.

Tajani also firmly ruled out the possibility of deploying Italian troops to Ukraine, whether as part of a European or NATO mission.

“Another option is a UN mission, which could act as intermediate forces after peace is achieved,” Tajani added.

Media reports suggest that the UK and France have drafted a plan to send up to 30,000 European troops to Ukraine, though Tajani’s statements reflect Italy’s preference for alternative solutions.
