Bomb disposal operation underway in Gdańsk Bay to clear WWII munitions

In the Polish city of Gdańsk, a large-scale operation has begun to deactivate 100 bombs. A multi-day operation is underway in the bay of the Polish port city of Gdańsk to neutralize about a hundred unexploded munitions discovered at the site planned for a gas terminal.

A large accumulation of munitions and World War II-era bombs was found in the Gdańsk Bay during an examination of the site where a floating gas terminal is to be located.

In total, about a hundred explosive objects weighing up to 1,200 kg were found on the seabed. Deactivating them through controlled detonations may take up to five days. The operation began on Tuesday, March 11.

From Tuesday to Friday, as well as the following Tuesday, a specific section of the beach will be closed to visitors from 9 AM to 4 PM – during these hours, divers-sappers will be working.

“Divers will go underwater and attach explosive charges, after which controlled detonations will take place… Although the munitions have been underwater for 80 years, they are still very dangerous,” noted Lukasz Kozarski from the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla, involved in the operation.
